Abstract

This research aims to examine the effects of historical urban landscapes on urban identity in the city of Van (Turkiye), where concrete cultural landscapes that have hosted various civilizations are layered. The research was conducted through a literature review and after expert evaluation in the selection of historical urban landscapes, which are cultural landscape areas, and a photo-survey was conducted with 415 people with a user-oriented approach. In this way, city images, identity and memory spaces in minds were determined. City users it has been concluded that historical urban landscapes are the dominant elements in the formation of urban identity in the central districts of Van. In this sense, some suggestions have been developed for the protection and development of historical urban landscape elements that provide a connection with the past and are important and effective in the formation of urban identity for their sustainability with their surroundings.
